Sandhan Valley is a combination of valley and canyon in Sahyadri ranges which is also known as “The Great Canyon”. The valley is located in the district of Ahmednagar, which is situated near to Ratangad. The shadow valley is covered with a 200ft long mountain. Gigantic mountain, waterfalls, and rocky 2.5 km route make it difficult and adventures for trekkers. This beautiful valley is just 190km away from very Pune.
I’m always looking for new adventures and opportunity to explore nearby places. After my last trek to Pohlani Mata Temple, Dalhousie (Himachal Pradesh), I decided to explore trekking options near Pune.
Last year I covered easy and moderate treks including Sinhagad Fort, Lohgad Fort, Rajmachi Fort, Rajgad Fort Karla Caves. This time I decided not to fall while trekking and really it was difficult to do so.
We started from Shivajinagar Pune at 2230 hrs with a group of 21 people. From there we took Pune-Nashik highway and reached our destination at somewhere at 5 or 6 in the morning. It was cold and foggy morning, literally ‘fog chal raha tha’. We had our breakfast at the base village Samrad, and after a refreshing chai (tea) we started our trek.
The Shadow Valley:
The water carved shadow valley offers a narrow stripe with around 200ft tall rock mountain both the side and a mesmerizing view that you can’t forget. As soon as we started we saw a breathtaking view of the sun rising behind the mountains. As we marched, we saw rocks everywhere. As we move forward we came across water pools that were almost 3-4ft deep at some places. Water was cold due mountains were as they were blocking the sun rays to reach the bottom.
Sandhan Valley surprises you every time with natural waterfalls and huge mountain cut rocks. It is heaven for trekkers and photography enthusiast. The valley was descending and it was not as easy as other trekking places. There were huge rocks and water pools in between that were making it difficult to pass. After almost 1-2 hours of trekking, we reached our destination.
We took some good pictures, relaxed and had our snacks. The view was astonishing with the wide open area.
